I like to blog about a little bit of everything so, in between baking and aspiring photography posts, I thought I’d share some things I’ve learned studying a foreign language. I know, for me personally, listening and speaking German are definitely my biggest weaknesses. So I’ve spent a lot of time online searching and searching. For me, I’ve found the videos with German subtitles to be the most helpful — although I do get stuck in the trap of merely reading instead of listening sometimes. I’ve come across a few great resources that offer videos with subtitles that I wanted to share.
- ZDFmediathek is the online video portal for German station ZDF. They have loads and loads of online videos from news to daily soaps to weekly dramas and comedies. (The Daily Show-like Heute-Show and the CIS-esque SOKO series are favorites of mine!) Some of the shows even have subtitles and I’ve found if you do a search with “untertitel,” you can get just the videos subtitled in German.
- Lindenstrasse, the popular German weekly soap opera, has free on-demand streams of the show with German subtitles. I’ve found the language level to be not too difficult.
- Jojo sucht das Glück is an online soap from Deutsche Welle. It hasn’t been updated in a long time but there are 33 short episodes and you can get them subtitled in German.
Do you know of any other subtitled videos? Be sure to share!
