Get to Know Ludwig Trepte

Ludwig Trepte was born on May 17, 1988, in East Berlin, East Germany. He is the youngest son of Stephan Trepte, a rock musician.

Trepte’s acting career started early on. At only twelve years old, he was on the small screen. He had acting roles in television mini-series as well as the all-important German TV crime series Tatort. By the time he was in his late teens, he had earned his first film roles.

Trepte achieved all of this without any formal training as an actor.

Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter (Generation War)

While the BBC and HBO seem to have cornered the market on high-quality television mini-series, in Germany, the public broadcaster ZDF has produced Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter.

Known internationally as Generation War, the production is a three-part mini-series. The show follows the lives of a group of 20-something German friends as they navigate through a world centered on World War II.

Ludwig Trepte portrays a Jewish tailor whose Christian German girlfriend is hungry for the spotlight. Unsurprisingly, the film has been highly controversial in Germany for its depiction of Nazi-era Germany.

The series also stars Katharina Schüttler as his girlfriend, Tom Schilling, Miriam Stein, and Volker Bruch as members of the group of friends.

Deutschland 83

Easily one of the better television shows in recent years, if you ask me, Deutschland 83 is a collaboration between United States’ Sundance TV and Germany’s RTL. It is also the first German-language series to air on American television.

Set in 1983 Cold War-era Germany, the show follows Jonas Nay as Martin Rauch, an East German soldier that becomes a spy embedded in West Berlin. Ludwig Trepte portrays the son of a West German general that serves in the West with Rauch. The father-son relationship is complicated. As the show progresses, it finds Trepte as a reluctant soldier questioning his sexuality and political beliefs.

The show is addictive: get ready to binge-watch. Stream it now on Hulu. There are three seasons of the show to date with Deutschland 86 and Deutschland 89 following the original.

2009’s What You Don’t See (Was Du nicht siehst) is the debut film from director and screenwriter Wolfgang Fischer.

In the psychological thriller, Ludwig Trepte portrays seventeen-year-old Anton. The teenager is struggling to deal with the suicide of his father. As if that is not enough, he has trouble with his mother’s new relationship as well as difficult relationships with his siblings. Anton’s mother takes him and her new boyfriend on a vacation in France. But it is only a matter of time until true feelings bubble up.

The film also stars actor Frederick Lau as David, a somewhat odd teen that Anton gets to know in France.
