In the spring of 2024, a video of two German musicians singing a German language tongue-twister went viral — not just in Germany, but worldwide. The video gained immense popularity and crossed cultural barriers with its catchy rhythm, sing-song lyrics, and inherent silliness. Featuring Marti Fischer, the song was the creation of Bodo Wartke.
Wartke is no overnight success. He has been working as a musician and cabaret artist for nearly three decades. If that viral video has piqued your interest, now is the time to get to know Bodo Wartke and explore learning German with music!
Get to Know Bodo Wartke
Bodo Wartke was born on May 21, 1977, in Ratekau, a town in northern Germany. Both of his parents were doctors, but they divorced after the death of Bodo’s infant sister. He grew up in Reinbek and Bad Schwartau, where his mother worked.
Wartke completed his Abitur in 1996 and then fulfilled his national civil service at a hospital in Lübeck. The following year, he moved to Berlin to study physics. However, this pursuit was short-lived, and he quickly switched his major to music studies. He later graduated from the Celler Schule, a school focused on lyricism.
His journey to becoming a musician took an unusual turn after he lost a fingertip in a childhood accident. This incident motivated him to pursue a professional career in piano.
And his determination paid off. Wartke has since delved into piano cabaret and theater, collaborated with orchestras, and toured globally.
Music of Bodo Wartke
No one can accuse Bodo Wartke of not finding joy in his particular brand of humorous music. It oozes out of every note he plays on the piano and every word he sings.
For those who were introduced to Wartke by way of the viral video for “Barbaras Rhabarberbar,” his series of tongue twisters (Zungenbrecher in German) might be just what you are looking for. At the time of writing, he has more than three dozen tracks on a Zungenbrecher 4.0 Spotify playlist. The brief tracks are infectious, catchy, and full of personality. His ability to rapidly spit tongue twisters is awe-inspiring, regardless of your language.
But the tongue twisters are only a part of Wartke’s repertoire. His cabaret performances truly showcase his joy. With Wartke’s extensive discography, you can turn your living room or car into your personal cabaret.
Albums like 2011’s Klaviersdelikte and 2020’s Wandelmutreveal an incredible purity and beauty in the simplicity of his performances. Without missing a beat, he transitions from boogie-woogie piano to rapping, offering humorous takes on pop culture, current events, and pop music.
His 2023 release Lieblingslieder (Live) captures the energy of live performances, letting you experience the audience’s reactions as they chuckle to songs like “Ja, Schatz!”—a humorous recounting of his distaste for his partner followed by a comic retreat during the chorus.
Wartke also presents a completely different dimension to his music when performing live with orchestras. In 2021, he collaborated with WDR Funkhausorchester for Jetzt oder Sinfonie!, a particularly vibrant and lively recording.
