There’s nothing more exciting than opening your mailbox to find a package, which is part of why subscription boxes have become so popular. One such service is the TokyoTreat box, specializing in Japanese snacks and candy. The team at TokyoTreat kindly reached out and sent me their November 2024 “Osaka Snackathon” theme box to try. With my first trip to Japan on the horizon, my husband and I had a great time exploring the surprise box of treats. It was tasty, educational, and fun!
What is TokyoTreat?
TokyoTreat has been in business for nearly a decade. It was founded in 2015 by Ayumi Chikamoto. It started as a way to share Japanese treats with friends outside her native Japan. Chikamoto initially worked out of her home, but today TokyoTreat ships its popular boxes worldwide directly from Japan.
Each monthly TokyoTreat box contains 15 to 20 Japanese snacks, with a balanced mix of drinks, unique Kit Kat flavors, and instant ramen, plus crowd-pleasers like candy, cookies, and crunchy, salty snacks.
The box also includes a guide with each month’s theme, fun facts, and tips, along with details on the treats in the box, including allergen information. The guide is thoughtfully printed in Japanese style, read from right to left.
TokyoTreat Review
The November 2024 box has an Osaka, Japan, theme, showcasing many highlights associated with this modern, vibrant city: street eats like takoyaki (fried octopus balls), manzai (a sort of stand-up comedy), and seafood.
There is a wide variety of flavors in the box. Each item is “Goldilocks-sized” – not too big, not too small, but just right! The individual snacks are large enough to share or enjoy if you like them but not so big if something isn’t to your taste. And there’s no skimping! The box even includes a full bag of ten Kit Kats in Mont Blanc flavor. No sample sizes here!
I found the box to be the perfect size to share with my husband. We frequently visit Japanese grocery stores, so I know these items in the subscription box aren’t ones I could easily find locally or online. Plus, it’s so convenient to have them arrive on your doorstep each month. Since my husband is learning Japanese, we had fun trying to recognize the katakana and hiragana characters.
In particular, I loved the can of Sangaria Japanese plum soda included in the box. For a soda, the plum flavor was remarkably crisp and refreshing. There were also fun snacks like cola mochi squares served with a toothpick and Ramune-flavored (Japanese lemon-lime soda) gummies featuring sea creatures in a tug-of-war. You pull them apart with another person, and the “winner” gets the larger piece. Perhaps the most unusual snack in the box is the Salsa Sauce Katsu Bites, a crispy treat that blends salsa and katsu (pork cutlet) flavors.
While a subscription to TokyoTreat isn’t inexpensive, the quantity and quality of the snacks are impressive giving you good value for your buck. The boxes make a special treat for yourself or a small family – or a thoughtful gift for someone special.
Thank you to TokyoTreat for the gifted treat box. All opinions, as well as photos, are my own. This post contains affiliate links.
